Summer Runs in Siesta Key

This summer, are you planning to get away with the family to one of Florida’s top travel destinations?

Siesta Key is world-renowned for its incredible beach but has plenty of other attractions for the whole family to enjoy. The town of Sarasota has regular cultural events, and there are plenty of outdoor activities available, such as kayaking or marine wildlife tours near our Siesta Key condos. If yours is an especially active family, you might be looking for ways to keep everyone physically occupied. Did you know that Siesta Key residents love to go on formal runs up and down the famous white sands?

Weekly Beach Runs

Every Tuesday night from June until the end of July, the Manasota Track Club holds a Beach Run starting at 6:30 pm. The run officially takes place from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Mile-long fun runs start for the kids at 6:30 pm and the adults’ race starts at 7 pm. Food is provided at each of the events. From tacos to subs to pizza, the whole family can enjoy a good workout followed by some delicious picnic food! Upcoming races include Adventure Run (July 9), Chick Chaser (July 16), Wall Run (July 23), and Beauty and the Beast 4 Miler (July 30). There is a one-time $1 registration fee for children.

Siesta Sprint Triathlon

On August 4, Siesta Key will hold its annual Siesta Sprint Triathlon, which offers a wide variety of races to compete in. There is the traditional sprint triathlon, which involves a 3-mile run, 11 miles of biking, and 1/4 mile of swimming. The sprint duathlon includes a 1-mile run, 11 miles of biking, followed by another 3 miles of running. Additionally, there is the Splash N Dash (running and swimming), Super Sprint (swimming, biking, and running), Relay (swimming, biking, and running), Aquabike (biking and swimming), and Swimrun (swimming and running). All events will take place from 7:30 am to 11:00 am.

Depending on the race, registration costs between $27.50 and $90.10. The sooner you register, the better, as costs increase after June 30 for the duathlon and triathlon. For most races, registration ends July 31 or August 1.

Informal Runs

If you love to run but aren’t too keen on the idea of joining an organized event, there are plenty of locations to run solo. The white sand of Siesta Beach is firm and optimal for running at low tide. If you run the entire stretch of beach and back (avoiding Turtle Beach and Crescent Beach, which are not good for running), the roundtrip distance is about 6 miles.
Mainland Sarasota has plenty of more great locations to run. The Ringling Causeway, which connects downtown Sarasota to Lido Key, is the running highlight of Sarasota with spectacular water views and even a slight elevation gain that will get the heart rate going. Celery Fields Trails also offers hills with 4 miles of perimeter trails around marshlands. The area used to consist of celery fields but is now a combination of a water collection zone, restored wetlands area, birding spot, and recreation area.

Casey Key and Bay Shore Road are pleasant with low traffic and provide great views of the gulf and some impressive waterside homes. For a quick run, the rowing lake at Nathan Benderson Park has an excellent path. Or jaunt downtown to Sarasota’s historic area for a “run seeing tour” of the town’s cultural center.

South of Sarasota, the 11-mile Legacy Trail bike path runs into the Venetian waterway trail, which adds another 5 miles. Oscar Scherer State Park, a 1,200-acre state park between Venice and Sarasota, offers 15 miles of trails.
